How do I market my business so that I can become and remain visible to my target audience?

This is such a great question, an important question and one that I get asked all too often as a small business mentor.

First of all, let’s define the meaning of marketing, because marketing means so much more than simply selling a product or service. It’s so misunderstood.

Most people believe that marketing starts after a product and/or service is designed, produced and ready for sale. It’s so far from the truth.

Marketing starts from the time you start interacting and engaging with people. It’s how we react/respond to others, to their feedback, their suggestions and advice.

Marketing is how we turn up as an individual. A mature professional.

There are many different meanings that we give to marketing, depending on the perspective that we choose to take.

The main role of marketing is to raise awareness of a product and/or service to bring in revenue and boost profits. Bottom line, that’s why people market, with the intention to sell a product and/or service. It’s the most important function within any business to keep a business alive and running.

The thing is, it’s so much more than that.

Marketing is all about people and human behaviour and it involves strategic thinking and strategic thinking is all about a pattern in a stream of actions we must take in order to achieve the business objectives.

I cannot stress enough how important it is to choosing the right marketing strategy, it’s absolutely crucial to building your brand, your reputation and gaining competitive advantage.

It’s never a ‘one size fits all’ when it comes to marketing.

Marketing is the last thing you cut and the first thing you must prioritise.
